Your images never leave your device

When you drop, paste or pick a screenshot, Blackout reads and edits it inside your browser, on your computer or phone. The image is not uploaded, sent or copied to any server. We never receive it, so we cannot see it, keep it or lose it.

This page enforces that with a strict content security policy: the browser is told to refuse connections to any other website. You can check it yourself by opening your browser’s developer tools and watching the Network tab while you use the tool.

What we store

Nothing. There are no accounts, no cookies, no analytics, no ads and no tracking scripts. Your image exists only in the memory of the open page, and is gone when you close or reload it.

What our host can see

Blackout is a static website served by Vercel. Like any web host, Vercel handles the technical request that delivers the page to you and may keep ordinary server logs, such as your IP address and the time of the visit. Those logs do not include your images, because your images are never sent.

The text reader

Text in your image is found with an open-source reader (Tesseract) that is downloaded from this site, once, and runs on your device. It does not call any outside service.

Files you save

The PNG you download is a flat image with the covered areas painted over. Metadata from the original, such as location and camera details, is not carried over. Once you save a file, it is yours to look after.

Automatic detection is not perfect

Blackout can miss private details. Always look over the result before you share it.
